Our Judges, a portrait

Otto Frühwirth (AT)

I´m an agility-trainer and dogguide since 1989. At that time we had our collie-mangrel Daysy. In 1990 we got our Malinois female dog Bea. In 1995 I qualifized with her for EM in Turin. Unfortunately Daysy died in 1999, an afterwards we bought Chat, a Malinois male dog. Unfortunately ha had to stop with agility in 2005, because he had a slipped-disc. But nowadays he feels still healthy. Now I guide the female-dog Tiki from my daughter, which is a Sheltie. 1994 I passed the guide-examination and since 1996 I`m an international judge and judged in a lot of countries. I`m also working as a agility-schoolleader since a few years. I`m also the manager from our own club named ÖGV Lustenau. I`m pleased and very honoured, that I´ve been invited to EO as a judge. I also thank you for being judge at the WM.

Marco Mouwen (CH)

Agility Competitor

  • 1982: I started with Agility at the local club "KV Rijnland" (Leiden NL). I took several seminars with Peter Lewis, Bill and Angela Chuter who were among the first people to introduce agility to the rest of the world.
  • 1982-1989: Several Agility as well as Obedience (English Obedience) trainers from England came to Holland where I took the opportunity to work with them. Their phylosophy about working with dogs is still the one I believe in.
  • 1985-1989: I took part in several Championships and Team Contests for our club "KC Uden" (NL).
  • Mitch: My first Border Collie (Logo of agimm): 1991: Participation at the 1st European Championship in Helsinki. As part of the Swiss Team that won the Gold Medal in Team Competition; 1991 we made it finals at the Swiss National Championship; 1992: 6th place at the Swiss National Championship, 2 months later Mitch died of cancer at the age of 6 years. I will always remember him.
  • Maid: Border Collie Bitch born 23th July 1994. Since 1996 we run in the Agility Class 3. In only 6 months we made it to the highest level. Several victories in agility and jumping contests. 4 times we won all contests on one day: Agility World Championship: 1997 (Double World Champion), 1998, 1999 und 2002 (14th); Agility World Cup: 1997 (12th), 1998 (Winner), 1999; 10 times participation at the Swiss National Championship, 8 times finalist; SM-Final 1996, 1998, 1999 (Meister Standard), 2000, 2001, 2002 (Meister Large), 2003 (4. Platz); Finalist at the Swiss National Championship: 1996, 1998, 1999 (Winner), 2000, 2001, 2002 (Winner), 2003 (4th Place).

  • Mel: With 16 contests already in Agility Class 3; 2nd half of 2005 50% confirmations (best 20% with a clean run in agility 3); 2nd place at the National Team Competition 2005 with AT Züri-West (Cayan Biberstein, Chantal Küng and Christa Mouwen); Mel died on the 2nd of January 2006 unexpectedly.
Agility Trainer
  • 1985-1989: I built up with my twin brother the agility part of "KC Uden".
  • 1990: Grounding and honorary member of the "Agility Team Crazy Jumpers Freiamt". Agility trainer in the beginning.
  • 1992: Own training group "agimm". Several teams of this group made it to the Swiss National Team or had success on national and international competitions.
  • 1992-1995: National Agility Trainer of the Swiss National Team:
  • 1993: 3rd place for the Standard-Team at the European Championship in Linz.
  • 1995: Silver Medal for both Teams at the European Championship in Turin.
  • Since 1997: Agility Seminars in Holland, Germany, United States, Canada, Switzerland, Columbia and Finland.
Judge
  • 1990-1991: I was trained as judge in Switzerland and England (passed with distinction).
  • Since 1991: I judged in many countries in Europe (Fin, N, Dk, NL, F, E, A, CH), Japan and USA. I judged the National Championships in Finland and Spain and the Nordic Championship in 2002, Agility World Cup Final. I was the first foreign Judge at an AKC-Show. 1996 I judged the World Championship in Morges CH and 2004 the Agility World Cup.
  • Judge in several countries in Europe, in the USA, in Columbia and in Japan.

Ronald Mouwen (NL)

Introduction:
I’m Ronald Mouwen, married, 2 children. I work as a veterinarian in my own practice. I’m very honoured to be invited to judge this championship. I’m doing agility since 1983 and I’m a judge since 1995. I’ve got Border Collies  (6 in total). In the past I became Dutch champion large dogs in 1990 and dog of the year in 1990 and 1992. I represented Holland at the European championships twice. I’m still competing agility, but since I have my own practice I don’t find the time to “finetune” my dogs to compete with the best. I hope I can change that in the future (wishful thinking, I’m afraid)
Goals in my courses:
Because of my background as a veterinarian, the most major rule in my courses is safety. This will go further than ‘avoiding dangerous situations’ in a course. I also try to avoid courses which will invite the handlers to train in a way that the dogs will be trained “over the top”.  I’ve seen too many dogs with agility injuries to know the danger of training the wrong way and I hope the (small) influence I have as a judge can alter that a bit. Another goal in my courses will be: “testing the dog and handler in all skills of agility”, keeping in mind that the sport is testing the dog’s agility, not just obedience. Therefore, a part of my courses will often be built mainly to test the skills of the dog. An excellent dog (in mind and soundness) will then have the change to show his excellence and gain seconds on the rest. I hope we will have a nice weekend of agility with a lot of spectacular agility. Looking forward to meet you all.

Carl de Rouck (BE)

Spring of 1985. Marc, head trainer of “de Noorderwijkse  Hondenvrienden”, the club I attended 1 ½ year to train obedience, came up to me and said: “Carl, I heard about a new dog sport that has been introduced at Crufts some years ago. I ‘d like  to  offer agility to our club members as well, and I’m convinced you’re the man to give the training.” I kindly rejected the honor as I didn’t have the slightest clue  of what he was talking about, but I promised I would surely attend the classes he would be giving. Less than half a year later I was “manipulated” in to taking over the classes.

24 years later, I’m more in to agility as ever. After performing at high level in the early 90ties with my first Tervueren, Munchanga (Chang for friends J), I decided to start doing some judging, next to staying actively involved in handling and training. In the mean time I  got international judging experience all over Europe… Probably the most important international event I have judged up until now  is the 2007 World Championship for Belgian Shepherds only in France.

Living in Bemmel, close to Arnhem in the Netherlands for almost a year now with my friend Marielle, dogs became an even more important part in life. Next to our older dogs, Amber, Xandokan and Ebony, we have 3 youngsters:  Cimi, Hurricane and Gascoigne; a Groendael, a Tevueren and … a Blue Merle Border Collie.

Corrie Vink (NL)
